How To Eat More as an Ectomorph

by David on December 23, 2009

Eating more is the most important thing an ectomorph can do to put on weight and build muscle, but it’s also the hardest. To be truthful: I don’t eat enough. It’s an area that’s sorely lacking in my regiment to put on weight, but I do still have some ideas that will be of use to pack a few more calories into each meal.

  1. Distract yourself. To achieve a state of Zen it’s recommended to eat slowly and mindfully, being aware of every bite you take. But we’re not practicing Zen, we’re trying to put on some weight. Start eating in front of the TV, or while having conversations with friends and family – the longer the better. As you’re distracted eating more becomes an absent minded action and you’ll be surprised about how much you can get down.
  2. Put it all in a burger. A few weeks back I made a burger that had a beef patty, two eggs, melted cheese, lettuce, and pineapple on it. It doesn’t sound like a huge amount now that I write it down, but this thing was a monster. Yet even though it was more than I’d probably eat in even two meals, I was still able to get it down because it was a self contained piece of food.
  3. Eat when you’re hungry. It sounds so simple that’s it’s almost silly, right? But one reason ectomorph’s remain skinny is they ignore their bodies desire for food, or at least aren’t controlled by it (which has it’s advantages, but isn’t conducive to putting on weight). Become mindful of how you’re feeling and if there’s even just a tinge of hunger, go and prepare a meal.
  4. Go for small meals. Some ectomorphic folk prefer the strategy of starving themselves all day and then having a big meal at night. This does not work. It is an ineffective way to put on more weight. Instead, start eating smaller meals throughout the day. You’ll be able to eat more this way.
  5. Don’t stop! The more you eat the more you’ll be able to eat in the future. Remain persistent with your goal to eat more and focus on your dream of building muscle as an ectomorph – that thought will get you through some of the uncomfortableness you’ll experience by being overwhelmed with food.
