Don’t Train, Form Habits

by David on January 4, 2010

Training is a big, scary step. Perhaps not for everyone, but dedicating 90+ minutes per week to lifting weights and all the jazz doesn’t exactly seem like an easy schedule to stick to (even though I have plenty of free time at my age).

But that’s why I’m not tackling training as one big huge problem. Instead, I’m working on forming individual habits that will soon come together as a series of training sessions. I know that sounds weird but here is what I mean:

For the past 2 months or so I’ve been increasing my strength with pull ups and some occasional other bodyweight exercises. This isn’t a fast way to get gains, but I love the simplicity of the pull up and I figure if I’m going to be doing this for the long term it’s okay to start a bit slower. Doing sets of pull ups 3-4 times per week has become both an enjoyable and rewarding habit.

Now, as soon as I order in some dumbbells, I’ll begin using those in a similar habitual form, soon after doing my sets of pull ups, and so on and so forth.

So I guess what I’m really doing is constructing my training much like Lego blocks. It’s not a quick way to strength and mass, but smaller habits are easier to form and I’m not interested in making things difficult for myself.

Break down big goals, like a training routine, and instill them through a series of progressively formed habits.
