13 Things Skinny Guys Should Forget About

by David on March 1, 2010

Through this blog I share plenty of tips of what you should be doing and thinking about as a skinny guy. Today I’d like to take a different approach. Here are a bunch of things you can start forgetting about right now and eliminate a nice amount of mental clutter.

  1. Exercises that make you look stupid. Worthwhile exercises don’t have you flailing your arms wildly or doing convoluted reps of nothingness.
  2. High rep, low intensity training. Lifting 1kg weights a thousand times will do bugger all when you’re trying to build muscle. Don’t waste your time.
  3. Supplements. Perhaps there are some that are alright, but your safest bet is to just stick with healthy food. Think of like this: cavemen didn’t need supplements and they were strong, so why do you need them? You’re not a genetic oddity.
  4. Gorging on unhealthy food. While a McDonald’s meal may be packed with calories it’ll make you feel like crap – it’s not worth it. Stick with healthy, organic food that provides you with plenty of calories and protein and makes you feel good in the long term.
  5. Bodybuilding magazines. They’re all owned by supplement companies anyways.
  6. Isolation exercises. Compound is where it’s at. Every exercise you do should work out multiple muscle groups for maximum effectiveness and results.
  7. Complexity. Simplicity always reigns supreme.
  8. Training more than 3 times per week. Training may stimulate muscle growth but it’s when you’re recovering that the muscle is actually built. Get plenty of sleep and don’t overtrain.
  9. Inconsistency with training and diet. Persistence is of course a must when it comes to strength training but if you constantly switch up your calorie intake and approach to training you’ll get nowhere. Find a routine and diet that you believe in and stick with it.
  10. Meal plans. Be mindful of your hunger rather than trying to conform to a list of foods you need to eat each day.
  11. Hoping for progress rather than taking action.  Just do something. That’s all it takes. Do one thing every day that takes you towards your goals.
  12. Get big quick schemes. Don’t become the prey of internet marketers shelling shady products about things they know nothing about, or at least shouldn’t be teaching.
  13. Quitting. Never give up. Never.
